Help me win the bragging rights trivia victory at work...

Post by fbmf »

I'm attempting to win a trivia contest here at work.
Day 3 Trivia Question wrote: During the course of their respective careers, Elvis had 29 Top Ten hits and the Beatles had 22. Since the Beatles' last single reached number one, it seems reasonable to assume that their string would have continued had they not broken up, whereas Presley clearly suffered a severe falling off in popularity after his six years polluting drive-ins across the country with what is widely regarded as the most boring series of movies ever made. But rationalize as we might, the final score remains Memphis 29, Liverpool 22. How many top ten hits from these artists can you name?
When I google "Beatles top 10" or the like I get several random people's thoughts on what the greatest 10 Beatle/Elvis songs were.

Obviously, I do not give a shit what some random asshole thinks, I want to know what Billboard Magazine said back in the day.

Since my GOOGLE-FU is failing me today...anybody want to take a crack at it?

According to Wikipedia, the following Beatles songs made the top 10 in the U.S.:

Love Me Do
Please Please Me
P.S. I Love You
Do You Want To Know A Secret
I Want To Hold Your Hand
She Loves You
Twist And Shout
A Hard Day's Night
Can't Buy Me Love
Eight Days A Week
I Feel Fine
She's A Woman
Day Tripper
Help
Nowhere Man
Ticket To Ride
We Can Work It Out
Yesterday
Got To Get You Into My Life
Paperback Writer
Yellow Submarine
All You Need Is Love
Christmas Time (Is Here Again)
Hello, Goodbye
Penny Lane
Strawberry Fields Forever
Hey Jude
Lady Madonna
Come Together
For You Blue
Get Back
Let It Be
Something
The Ballad Of John And Yoko
The Long And Winding Road
Free As A Bird

Now, that's 37. So, maybe some of those don't count for some reason?

Perhaps the question should have specified nr. 1 hits, in which case you get:

A Hard Day's Night
All You Need Is Love
Can't Buy Me Love
Come Together
Eight Days a Week
For You Blue
Get Back
Hello, Goodbye
Help!
Hey Jude
I Feel Fine
I Want to Hold Your Hand
Let It Be
Love Me Do
Paperback Writer
Penny Lane
She Loves You
Something
The Long and Winding Road
Ticket to Ride
We Can Work It Out
Yesterday

Which makes 22.

So I'm in charge of said trivia game this year. I want to post about 20 pictures up on the wall of people who made national (American) news in 2013 and have the players identify them. They don't have to tell me what they did to make the news, just identify who it is.

What I'm asking for is ideas for the 20 or so people. You don't have to post pictures, just names and a short description of why they made the National American news in 2013.

kthxluvyumeanit.

Any of these folks (Company which uploaded open-source schematics for 3-d printable pistol.)

"But transportation issues are social-justice issues. The toll of bad transit policies and worse infrastructure—trains and buses that don’t run well and badly serve low-income neighborhoods, vehicular traffic that pollutes the environment and endangers the lives of cyclists and pedestrians—is borne disproportionately by black and brown communities."

Mario Draghi is the head of the European Central Bank. "Super Mario" has been in the news all over the place as various European economies collapse.

This is Suthep Thaugsuban. He's the leader of the fascist uprising in Thailand that is demanding that the elected government disband on the grounds that they don't think they can win elections in Thailand and really hate the most popular party. Also that while they may not have as many votes as Yingluck Shinawatra, they do have more guns.

Peculiar properties of spacetime ensure that the perception of the magnitude of Soon is fluid and dependent, not on an individual's time-reference, but on spatial and cultural location. A marketer generally perceives Soon as a finite, known, yet unspeakable time-interval; to a fan, the interval appears greater, and may in fact approach the infinite, becoming Never. Once the interval has passed, however, a certain time-lensing effect seems to occur, and the time-interval becomes vanishingly small. We therefore see the strange result that the same fragment of spacetime may be observed, in quick succession, as Soon, Never, and All Too Quickly.

one could think that *snickers*
but actually, she did something rather clever there . .
the problem for many people having to do speeches and the such in public is this:"what to do with my hands?"
and she made it into a kind of trademark for her . .

I suppose you could always do Putin and Snowden? The former is basically a free point for everyone as everyone knows who he is by his face (some might accidentally put "Dobby the House Elf" though), the latter is trickier because while everyone knows the name, putting it to a face is harder.

Bashar Al-Assad, President of Syria is made for this shit. His country is in the news all the damn time but many Americans still are unequipped to deal with the fact that Middle Eastern leaders are allowed to wear suits and ties. Plus, it's really not hard to find pics of the guy in which he looks more like a concierge smuggled in from a Mr. Bean movie than a head of state.

I am used to the old President of Iran looking more like Bashar Al-Assad actually, and I don't know why I was surprised when I first saw Hassan Rouhani's picture.
